The Ogwen & Carneddau guide was one of the first of the Climbers Club's successful two-volume guidebooks, with two limp-bound volumes (bound in the hard-wearing Skivertex) contained in a plastic outer cover. This solution to the problems caused by an ever-increasing number of climbs means that the climber need only carry one relatively light volume when climbing.

It describes the traditional climbing areas either side of the A5 road through the Ogwen Valley, and contains the classic climbs on the Idwal Slabs, Tryfan and the Glyders. Also described are the less populated, more mountainous crags in the Carneddau, in particular Llech Ddu and Craig yr Ysfa.

The area is, of course, famous for its lower-graded climbs and as a beginners' area, but hard climbing is provided by the walls of the Idwal Slabs and by some of the modern routes that have been climbed on the steep walls between the easier routes.
